60-Second Mind Shift: Mastering two domains of reality

Supporting you to free your mind so you can live from your heart!

“Dreams are lovely. But they are just dreams. Fleeting, ephemeral, pretty. But dreams do not come true just because you dream them. It’s hard work that makes things happen."

-Shonda Rhimes

If you’ve been reading my articles for a while, you might recall that I have written about two domains of reality. One is visionary reality, the realm where our dreams, visions and insights reside. This is the space Shonda is referring to in her quote above. The energy here is light, free, and full of possibility.

The other is physical reality, the place where energy takes form. It’s denser, slower, and more unpredictable.

When I was first introduced to these two domains by my mentor, I realized how comfortable I was hanging out in visionary reality. It’s a space that feels exciting and inspiring, a place where anything is possible, yet nothing is required. I could dream endlessly without ever needing to take action. And I did. And I felt stuck, but didn't know why.

Why is it so tempting to stay in that visionary realm? One reason is the way our brain is wired. Its primary job is to keep us alive by being efficient and conserving energy. So when we get the urge to do something that takes effort for example like exercising or starting a new project, our brain will often chime in with an excuse: “Maybe tomorrow.” Sound familiar?

The real test, the moment of truth, where the rubber meets the road begins when we take an idea or dream and take the small sweet steps to bring it into physical reality.

If it helps, imagine a line dividing visionary and physical reality. That line is where the free-flowing energy of vision bumps up against the density of the physical world. My mentor, Dr. Maria Nemeth, compares this to standing on a sunny beach and being suddenly hit by a cold wave of water. There’s a jolt of discomfort as we realize: This doesn't feel like I thought it would feel, and it's going to take way more effort than I expected.

And that’s when the monkey mind shows up. This is the inner voice of limiting internal dialogue that pipes up when we try something new or energy-intensive. It guards the boundary between vision and action, urging and convincing us to stay where it feels easier, lighter and safer. And the more we care about what we are bringing across the line into physical reality, the louder the monkey mind is. This is where many people stop because it feels too hard.

But, if we want our dreams to take shape, we have to step over that line.

As Shonda reminds us, hard work makes all the difference!

So I invite you to take a look at your own life. Is there a dream or goal that’s been lingering in your visionary reality? Is there an area where you could lean in a little more, apply some extra elbow grease, and take a small step forward?

Step By Step,

Jessie
